About Us Although Hull and East Yorkshire Community Foundation is a new venture for this area, Community Foundations have been active in the UK since the 1980s and there are now approximately 60 foundations across the country. About 95% of the UK population has access to a community foundation. Between them Community Foundations in the UK hold over £140m in endowment funds and in 2005-06 they gave over £70 million in grants. How does Hull and East Yorkshire benefit from a Community Foundation? It provides a mechanism to build an endowment to provide a sustainable source of grants for the area. Grants are given out from the interest - while the endowment gets bigger It provides a track record of effective engagement with the Private Sector in targeted social giving through an attractive variety of tax efficient mechanisms such as flow through funds and named funds. It offers an ability to rationalise and maximize the impact of grant making in the area by ensuring that existing small grants pots are distributed strategically without duplication It provides a mechanism to stop money going out of the area (as is often the case with donations to larger charities) and an ability to attract new money into the area.
